Today I moved from Plusnet to EE. Everything is fine except that I can no longer access Gmail pop.gmail.com to downl;oad my emails to Outlook (2003!). I can send emails via Outlook, and the "test" feature in Outlook says the settings are correct, but I get a server connection error when receiving. I don't see why changing ISP should have this effect. I can access my Gmail account online, but I can't download.
Solved! See the answer below or view the solution in context.

Solved it. Yep, it's a weird Google thing. ou have to go into security, search for App Password and generate a new 16 character password to replace your normal password in the account settings. Phew!!!

What have you put as the Incoming Server settings (all of them) in your Mail app, obscuring your name?

Thanks - pop.gmail.com, my gmail username and password, my name and email address, incoming server 995, ssl selected. Connect using LAN, leave copy on server.

That is correct & should work as mine does on EE FF BB:

But it doesn't. No idea why, I certainly didn't change and smtp or pop settings, and it worked fine till the cutover from Plusnet. my settings are the same as yours apart from a longer timeout. And the test works correctly and connects to both out and in servers. I have an account with Yahoo as well, and that connects ok.

There's some funny business with GMail email pwds. They are somehow generated by GMail - I forget how. Maybe they are dependent on your network which has now changed & needs regenerating. Still if that was the case I can't see sending emails still working.

Well i've deleted my original Gmail account settings in Outlook, and created a new (identical) one, and still can't connect to the Google server. I don't know what to try next.....

I thought it might be something like that.
