After switching to EE one of my devices won't connect to the new hub

I had to accept being booted off Plusnet onto EE to retain my home phone. The switch-over mostly went smoothly BUT - sod's law - my principal desktop workstation won't connect.

8 devices (two android phones, two android tablets, two Windows 10 laptops, a smart tv and a pvr) all connected without issue but my Windows 7 main pc won't. It doesn't pick up the EE network name in the list of available networks. If I select 'Other network' and enter this manually followed by the passcode it eventually reports it's unable to connect. Doesn't say why, of course. If I hotspot my phone it sees that and connects straight away.

The Windows troubleshooter can't resolve the problem. It just suggests rebooting the hub. This, predictably, doesn't help.

The hub is an EE Smart Hub Plus SH31B. The wireless card in the PC is an Asus PCE-N15 11n. The PC is running Windows 7 Professional SP1 with 8GB RAM.

On the advice of some knowledgeable members of the Plusnet community forum I've tried turning on the 2.4GHz compatible wi-fi and even turned off the standard 2.4GHz but that hasn't helped. I've tried going into 'Manage wireless networks' in the Network and Sharing Centre and manually adding both the standard and -Comp network names to the list, with the -Comp at the top which Windows should try first.

Still nothing. When I open 'Connect to a network' neither of them appear in the list, just neighbouring networks. Very frustrating.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

@Buggwrit You are going to have to go down the Windows Recovery route and restore back, you may need to boot off the CD-Rom to do so.

WPS is not the way to connect the Tp-Link to the EE Hub, the 6+ is a AX secure network.

Which TP-Link model did you purchase?

@JimM11

Whilst I don't doubt what you've said I think you'd have to agree it's a bit misleading for those of us that are not versed in the complexities that a WPS button is provided on the hub and the TP-Link instructions suggest using it.

The model is a RE450 AC1750 Dual Band.

Since my last post there has unexpectedly been some progress. I turned the pc on this morning with not much hope anything would happen but to my surprise it started to boot up with the normal short beep and the POST, which I wasn't getting yesterday. During the boot it detected a problem and offered a start-up repair which I accepted. Apparently this was successful as it started to load Windows and then detected another problem and offered a system restore which I also accepted. It then finally reached the login page and I was able to get in.

The extender was still missing from the list so I ran sfc /scannow more in hope than expectation. As expected it reported some problem files which it couldn't repair . It's been doing this for several years, it seems the cache of system files is also corrupted. Nevertheless I then noticed that instead of the TP-Link network being listed the hub was now present with a EXT postfix (I assumed that meant it was linking via the extender) so I entered the password for the 2.4GHz compatible network and it then connected.

It's been working ok for most of the day but has just crashed with a black screen, frozen cursor and unresponsive keyboard so I've had to turn it off at the wall again. It's been getting progressively more flaky in recent months so I think it's on borrowed time. I built it in 2011 so it's almost certainly exceeded it's expected lifetime.

@Buggwrit Was there a reason that you decided to go for that RE rather than the single band that was pointed out to you? There was zero impression that your PC has been so flaky that you are now pointing out, so really are you just wasting your time with it all now!

My Dell Dimension E520 is way older than yours, but i software upgraded it to Windows 10 Pro from XP Pro curtesy of Microsoft, it's still there working condition but sitting in retirement now replaced by a Geekom GT13 Unit 18 Months ago....

Just convenience, really. Someone sent me a link to it showing it available from Screwfix. I was due to be in the vicinity of a local branch two days later so went for a click & collect there to get it reasonably quickly without making a special journey. I wasn't too bothered about price as long as it worked - which it did until the pc crashed.

Looks like it's terminal this time. When I powered it up this morning it was back to the single long beep and no POST. I did try holding down Del to see if it would go into the BIOS setup but no go.

It hasn't been flaky that long and until recently the only issue had been the screen randomly going blank and the Nvidia driver reporting it had stopped working and had recovered. That's been happening for a couple of years.

In recent months I'd started to find that some web pages were becoming less compatible with Windows 7. Some functionality was being lost, some just didn't work at all, and of particular concern was my online banking which stopped remembering my credentials so I had to re-enter them every time. My bank said it would no longer support such an old OS.

Although it's probably a coincidence the flakiness first appeared after I did a test installation of R3dfox as someone suggested this might resolve some of the problems. It didn't and I eventually uninstalled it but after doing that I was left with a problem with Windows Explorer not working properly and ended up having to restore Windows from an image created with Macrium Reflect. That got everything back working apart from a system file pdh.dll that appears to be corrupted. As this only seems to be for collecting performance data I've been ignoring it as the system has otherwise been working fine.

I had planned to try to upgrade to Windows 10. I recently did this on the PC I'm now using by means of Microsoft's Media Creation Tool and after smoothing out a few wrinkles this has been working ok but I'd quite like to get hold of an OEM disk with a genuine licence because I think what I did with this pc wasn't strictly legitimate.

Well, since starting to type this reply I've tried again to boot it up and now there is no power at all. No fans, no lights. I've opened up the power supply and checked that mains is getting to the circuit board and the internal fuse is intact. I'm more than ever convinced this pc is cursed. This would be the second power supply that's failed and before you say it I did check that it had an adequate power rating.

I gues the first step now is to get a new PSU and see if that gets it working. If not I'll have to rebuild it.

@Buggwrit Good luck with it all!

Good news. The new PSU has got it up and running again 😌. Fingers crossed and touch wood it will boot up again tomorrow.

Now I just need to try and get the email and EE billing sorted.

Just to follow up on this.  Today I took delivery of a Wifi6 dongle and tried it in the old Lenovo laptop.  The dongle has a file system on it which contained a device driver which I installed.   I then had to disable the old (internal) wifi connection and connect via what is now known as wifi2.   This all took me some time rooting around in the deeper recesses of WIndows settings.   Eventually I got it to work, but it was extremely slow, around 1 Mb/s download speed.  I then tried the dongle in a couple of other USB ports and finally found one that must have a faster interface and this gave me a download of about 10-14 Mb/s and upload of 9 Mb/s, which is a lot slower than the line will support but good enough for what I need.  So I count that as a success.  The dongle I got was called AX300 Wifi Receiver, and it supports 801.11ax.  It cost £3-69 on eBay.

SInce Plusnet and EE both claimed that everything would work exactly the same after the forced migration I'm somewhat annoyed that I've had to spend anything, even this small amount, on retaining compatibility.  Its taken up a lot of my time too.  I'll see what I can do to claim the money back.

@ClivePage One has got to do what is needed to get something working, you should have went the other way with a cheap older RE, that would have probably connected better, given you full speeds with your internal, but you have it now and at least you have something working. Your dongle will be an AX3000 version so you need to look see if it is 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz connected, move it closer to the hub to get better speeds at least to test.
