2.4ghz very slow

I have 300 mbps ee fibre and get around 290 on 5ghz devices over wifi, but 2.4ghz is between 10 - 20mbps download with 60mbps upload.

I have 2 pc, a samsung phone and smart plugs on the 2.4ghz.

EE sent a new router, but still no change.

Would adding a mesh set up improve the 2.4ghz speed?

Any ideas where I should look?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @RBAILEY

It maybe the construction of your building. 2.4 is a legacy wifi frequency and is useful for longer distances but is slower, 5 is better at speed but shorter distances.

Heavy demand devices should be connected to 5 over 2.4. In fact i would invest in a wifi 6e access point and connect that to your ethernet point, then disable the wifi on your router.

Thanks

@RBAILEY Which router do you have? What device do you wish to test the 2.4ghz band with? And your figures do not make sense with regards to the upload,

It's a EE smart hub, it's only been active for a month. My bad on the figures, I've just done another speed test and got -  latency 16ms, download 5.27mbps and up load 20.53mbps. That's on a del pc 8 meters away with clear line of sight to the router. Another PC gives similar results and a new samsung a20e phone is the same. First thing I noticed on this hub was how bad the range is, my old sky hub would get to the end of my garden, this one doesn't get anywhere outside.

I also tried a factory reset of the router and had nothing else connected except the PC with a clean windows 10 install and the results are the same. I called EE/BT help a few days ago and they said EE hubs did have problems with 2.4ghz, but I would have thought that was an old issue. The other thought is that EE charge £10 a month for wifi extenders, maybe this is done on purpose to make us spend more money.

@RBAILEY Everything you are saying is bad. 1st post the model of your router on label back of hub. 2nd do ethernet connected speed test. 3rd 5ghz speed test. Log into your router 192.168.1.254 if you have not changed anything. Have a look and see what the sync speed is for up/down. You posted that you had the Fibre 300 package, is this for Landline or Mobile package and fttp or G.fast connection. 2.4ghz on a 1 x 1 device is 70mb/s, 2 x 2 device is 150mb/s, normal values are 70% of max rating, so on the 150 would expect you to get 100mb/s at least. And as you say, you can only test wi-fi with everything else of, 1 device with a problem can kill the band. And if it is a problem, temp turn of the 5ghz band from the hub manager to retest the 2.4ghz band. Do you have one ssid for all, not sure if your model allows for separate ssid's. Post back your results.

Do wi-fi test at 6 foot away from the router also,

Hi. It's a smart hub plus, no other info on the hub just passwords etc. Just the 1 ssid. I've just bought a 5ghz wireless adapter and that's giving me 190mbs where the PC is, I can't get an ethernet cable to reach it, but I'll try and pick 1 up. I can't find the sync speed anywhere in the router settings.

For such a big company, EE realy are rubbish at investing in decent equipment and apps, realy **bleep**e to use and so unreliable.

If you're on Full Fibre there are no sync speeds in the router. They are handled by the ONT modem. You can only test your speeds using speedtests.

@RBAILEY Your adapter is probably plugged into a usb2 port, your needs do not appear to require a full mesh system, possibly just a AX repeater/extender would suit your requirements. If you want a recommendation Asus RP-AX58 works, does require a possible setup, you would place it half way between your Router and Device. Look at your hub label and give the model number you have went from smarthub and smarthub+ and dont even know if you are on fttp either unless you do not know.

Yeah I don't know, I'm not that tech savvy unfortunately. There is no info at all on the router or on the info plate (just passwords) that gives details of the router make or model, just a manual that says smart hub plus on it that came in the box. I'll look at a booster but i have a few smart plugs in the front and back gardens on 2.4ghz, but tbh if this is the best ee can do then I'll throw it back at them.

Thanks for all the help though
