1.6Gbit connection new smart hub (white, small box) sporadic issues? DNS MITM?

Hello all,

So I recently changed my service from 900mbit to 1.6Gbit and that involved a change of router and obviously the OR ONT on the wall.

Ever since having it installed there seems to be an issue with (most likely DNS issues). Whatever is loaded/playing/game continue to work, but I have spells where NO further DNS requests seem to make it through.

I totally forgot to nslookup during one of these issues, but I will the next time it happens (it's pretty frequent and annoying). I can ping 8.8.8.8 (google) whilst being unable to load any webpages on any device/browser. Thus removing the possibility of it being localised to a single machine/device as some were using the router, some were set to DNS over HTTPS and some were using Google's 8.8.8.8 etc.

It is very much like the router is playing the MITM and intercepting the requests and then slowly, or failing to process these requests at all for a period of time which ranges up to about 45 seconds.

As I said, cached requests, or those already in process are fine, but even something as trivial as trying to watch a YT video is met with 45 seconds of nothing, totally unable to look up ANY address, but established connections and new connections not requiring DNS all work fine.

I'm not really one for conspiracies but I really feel like this new router is intercepting (MITM), attempting to do something with, and failing the DNS requests. This behaviour is only been present since getting the new Smart Hub (the tall, thing white one).

I did a quick google and it seems I'm not alone with this - is anyone else noticing this type of behavior?

Mixture of wired and wireless devices, same behaviour.

IIRC when you pair your hub with the app part of the process is checking for updates, so by resetting your app and hub you might force a firmware update if one is available.

Hey folks,

I've been struggling with DNS / connection issues for the past few days. All started with my daughters PC which is connected via Ethernet, getting no Internet reported. Tried WiFi, same issue, tried hotspot from mobile phone, worked fine! Have reset router to factory settings, I have even wiped the PC and still have the problem. Website traffic had slowed considerably around the same time. Now I can't even get a Nintendo Switch to connect on WiFi and it states DNS and can't connect. So frustrating. Will be keeping an eye on this thread and hopefully we get a solution as buying a new router is an expense I don't need!!

@tnj With the BT Smarthub2 and applying a Factory Reset to the hub it sure forced the Router to go find a FW update and applied it, did see it in the logging for that router but it has way more extensive logging applied to it that's for sure, as to wither the Plus/Pro do the same or if indeed an app change reinstall etc cause it to happen that is an unknown, only looking and noting pre/post may show that fact!

@nice_chap Do you have the EE Smarthub Pro version also for your connection and if so on the 1.6Gb/s package!

Yes, I have the 1.6Gb/s and EE Smarthub Pro.

@nice_chap Thanks for clearing it up by posting, at least you are on the latest for all!

Yes roll back the firmware to a more workable stable version for the time being it couldn't get any worse that we are all experiencing at the moment it would temporarily fix the main issues for now until they can diagnose further in the software/Hardware to the main cause of the problematic issues we are facing and it would give them more time to investigate test and then release a stable fix when I received my 2nd replacement smart hub pro  I noticed the stock firmware that came with the Hub was actually solid performance no issues until the last 2 - 3 updates it did over night then that created all the problems

It's driving me mad 😅 So frustrating, was with BT for 6 years on a 1Gb/s FTTP product before and never had an issue.

Can confirm same version number here.
