Creative travel photography with your iPhone

They say the best camera is the one you have with you, and on a recent holiday to Egypt this happened to be my iPhone 6S, when I decided to go it alone without my bulky Nikon DSLR.

The versatility and size of my iPhone made it easy to point and shoot great holiday pics the whole way up and down the Nile, and get creative with different photography styles and angles that resulted in some great holiday memories. And with the recent announcement of the 2018 winning iPhone photographs at the IPPA Awards, I picked up some new creative photography ideas for my next trip.

Here’s a few techniques I played around with on my iPhone, resulting in some of my favourite holiday snaps from my Egyptian adventure:

  • Point of view – one of my favourite adventures was riding a camel around the Pyramids of Giza. As I was wobbling along on a slightly grumpy camel, I managed to hold onto my iPhone long enough to get a few interesting point of view shots away. This angle puts the viewer in my place and helps them see what I was seeing from the top of that camel.

  • Playing with light – a classic rule of photography is to position the sun over your shoulder to use the light. But rules are made to be broken and there were too many gorgeous Egyptian sunsets to not play around with silhouettes and lens flare. Sailing on the Nile created the perfect conditions for a sunset photoshoot, and getting a picture of the boat captain with the sun going down in the background created the perfect backlit portrait.

  • Close-ups – Egypt is full of beautiful old buildings, covered in intricate patterns and textures (not to mention the hieroglyphics!). As well as standard photos of the scenery, I captured some of the more intricate details close-up to really highlight how incredible these places were. Markets full of fruit, spices and fabrics are great places to shoot patterns and colours, with macro photography and extreme close-ups bringing variety to your holiday photos.
