I have just received a Smart Router which hasn't been installed yet. Previously I had a Bright Box.

I would like to know whether it is possible to install a VPN on the new router, I use ProtonVPN>

Thanks

Hi @Kirigaya_Kazuto ,

I think that, broadly speaking, what you have said is correct and users may refer to https://protonvpn.com/support/categories/setup-and-use/ to do this.

The service provider's router is unlikely to be a suitable initiating device on the service provider's or stock firmware.

Yes, there should be no reason why a outbound VPN would not work

Hi @Mortimer ,

It sounds like you want to establish a site-to-site VPN connection and this is almost certainly not going to be supported by any of the service provider's routers using their stock firmware. In particular, it's unlikely that any of them will support or provide an OpenVPN server which the ProtonVPN documentation (below) says is required.

Please refer to https://protonvpn.com/support/installing-protonvpn-on-a-router/ to see a list of the routers you may choose from.

For other just browsing this thread, they may take a peek at https://protonvpn.com/blog/setup-a-vpn-router/ to understand the context.

Thanks for your help  .

I'll look into getting a different router

Did this VPN work thro' the BrightBox? If so, there's no reason for it not to work thro' an EE Smart Router.

If you think I helped please feel free to hit the "Thumbs Up" button below.

To phone EE CS: Dial Freephone +44 800 079 8586 - Option 1 for Mobile Phone & Mobile Broadband or Option 2 for Home Broadband & Home Phone

ISPs: 1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up > 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB > 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB > 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU > 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU > 2011: Orange 20 Meg WBC > 2014: EE 20 Meg WBC > 2020: EE 40 Meg FTTC > 2022:EE 80 Meg FTTC SoGEA > 2025 EE 150 Meg FTTP

I think you've misunderstood my question.  I don't want to have it go through the Smart Router, I wanted to know if I could install it on the Smart Router.  That question was already answered but thanks for taking the time to respond.

That's right, you can't install a VPN on an EE Smart Hub any more than you could on a BrightBox.

Your Q implied that you had previously done this with a Brightbox, which is impossible!

I dont think it did. I merely said I had been using a Brightbox. If it had been possible to install a vpn on that it's unlikely that I would ask the question in the first place as the Smart Router is supposedly superior.

Anyway the matter is now closed and there is no need to reply further
