Upgrade and free gift

Hi. 

I have seen posts about people getting free gifts when you upgrade. Is this for selected users only?

 

I have checked my upgrade and it says upfront fees, does anyone know why these fees need to be paid and why these are required?

@ShazzaW13  The upfront cost is to part cover the costs of the device.   The cheaper the tariff the more upfront cost you need to pay.  The higher the tariff the less you pay.    Mobile phones are not cheap devices and the tariff doesn’t cover the whole cost of the device.   Go back 7-10 years and you might of got the device for nothing as the network would cover that cost and that’s only because the devices were a lot cheaper to purchase then.
