Phone just died. Won't charge. Using correct charger.

Have tried holding down on/off button together with home button. Nothing. I am also old so not sure what to do next. I will say that the battery turned to red line so I plugged it in to charge and forgot to switch on socket at wall for a couple of hours. Could this be the problem and do you know what I can do please?

@leila   How long has it now been on charge for ?

Sorry Chris, took a bad turn. I am old. But my son says that as I have had the 'phone for a long time he is getting me a new one. I had tried to charge the 'phone for six hours. Anyway, thank you for responding to my cry for help. Should probably have spoken to him first.
