Hi there, my Dad is quite ill in hospital and relies on his phone for the only way to communicate. Anyway his phone is causing him problems as he's, amongst other things had a mini stroke, so anyway I have sourced the Doro 8040 which looks perfect, thing is he already has a 3 year sim only contract and the phone seems only available on contract...any ideas how I can sort this out? Also not knowing about these things, can you put any sim into any phone? thanks for your time. hope you can help me urgently,

Sorry to hear about your Dad.
You could login to myEE or call 150, and see if they can offer an upgrade to your chosen phone, I'm not sure if it's one that EE offer.
Alternatively you could look at buying your chosen phone SIM-free and then put your existing SIM into it.

Welcome to the EE Community.
I'm sorry to hear that your Dad is in hospital.
If your Dad is on a SIM plan, it shouldn't be longer than a 12 month contract.
Are you able to text UP to 150 from his phone to see if he is eligible to upgrade?
As @bristolian said, you can put an EE SIM into any unlocked phone.
