Just sharing my experience just now when our 4GEE WiFi Mini ran out of data & credit.
FYI Topping up the 4GEE WiFi Mini via it's own connection is currently broken if you have run out of data (this used to work / it's supposed to work!).
What happens is you get stuck early in the payment flow with an error about not completing the CAPTCHA check (to prove you're not a robot). Unfortunately the CAPTCHA check isn't actually displayed so you have no chance to complete it!
( I imagine this is because EE have not permitted access to the relevant captcha internet servers when you have no data -- they do permitt access to the rest of ee.co.uk ).
Anyway the workarround:
1) Using the 4GEE Wifi connection goto http://add-on.ee.co.uk/mbbstatus and note the "account number" displayed
2) Switch to another working Wifi connection and goto https://myaccount.ee.co.uk/app/fast-payment and enter the number from above, then complete the CAPTCHA check and make the payment.
3) Switch back to 4GEE Wifi connection and click Buy Data etc.
I did all the above whilst waiting 30+ minutes hoping someone would answer my call to customer services (they never answered). Even finding a way through the stupid menu system to try and speak to real person was a battle and a half.
Come on EE, this is a bit rubbish.
