Phone locked not sure why?

Phone has locked, galaxya34. Don’t know why ? It doesn’t have a PIN number to open it. Can receive calls but it will only let me make an emergency call. Have tried holding down power and volume buttons this doesn’t work. I don’t know my imei number. Please can anyone help?

Are you being asked for an unlock code?

Have you previously been able to use the phone OK?

Does your phone show a message on the lock screen? Anything to indicate what kind of unlock code it's needing?

Just a padlock.
If I swipe it comes up,with enter pin, numbers 1-9 and emergency call.

Yes I did 
No. Asking for PIN number of 4 characters but have never used a pin to open phone
No. Just a padlock at top of screen. I have no idea what caused it to lock

That's the prompt for a device PIN. You will need to enter the PIN to progress past the prompt.
