TV and EE box turning on themselves

Hi There,

In recent weeks, my partner and I have noticed when coming downstairs in the morning, that both our tv and EE box have been turned on? Sometimes both are on, other times it’s just one or the other. Occasionally, it doesn’t happen at all! Weird! This morning I was woken at 3:30am as I could hear it. Any help or ideas would be great! Thanks

Hi @Jcoups96,

Welcome to the EE Community

In terms of both of them switching on together, most likely you will have HDMI CEC enabled in your TV settings so that devices connected to your TV can turn the TV on when they turn on and vice versa. Only one being on may be a case of they both turned on initially before power saving settings turned off one.

Turning off HDMI CEC in your TV settings might help to narrow down which one is turning on by itself. Is it happening every night or what kind of frequency?

Do you have many other devices connected by HDMI to the TV? What power settings do you have on within the EE TV box settings?

Apologies @Alex_H - I meant to reply to this one sooner.

@Jcoups96 there is a discussion about a small number of customers experiencing an issue where the TV Box wakes from deep sleep overnight and turns the TV on - it is being investigated. The recommendation for now is to go into your TV Box settings and enable "Always on" mode in the Power settings.  This will only allow the box to go into shallow sleep instead of a deep one, which doesn't trigger this issue.

 hi Alex.
This is the current setting on the HDMI & CEC option. Even if it were to be turned on, why would that mean it should be turning on automatically? 3 of the last 4 mornings either both or one has been on.

We have no other devices connected via HDMI.

Great, thanks Darren. I shall change this setting. In the meantime, we prefer to have to EE control operate both tv and box, can we do this, or does this need to remain off?

I recommend turning CEC on.  If the EE TV remote then controls the TV then great. If not, then try resetting it:

https://ee.co.uk/help/tv-sport/fix-problem/reset-your-ee-tv-remote-control

There's no guarantee that it will control your TV though - not all TVs can be supported.

I seem the be able to control the tv with the EE control. The only thing it doesn’t do, is turn the tv off? Should I be able to?

I also tried a control reset, but I don’t get any flashing lights around the EE icon when I tried to reset.

If you press the power button, it turns just the TV Box off.  If you hold it for more than 1 second, it'll also turn the TV off too.

I have tried this, but the screen just goes blank (remains on) and then the picture reappears after a second or two.

You mentioned that the remote was controlling your TV OK - how did you confirm this?  e.g. if you use the volume on the EE TV remote, does it control your TV volume?

Give it another go at resetting the remote - I can't think of any reason for the lights to not flash on your remote other than the batteries being dead, and they're clearly not as it's controlling the TV Box OK.  Bear in mind that the Home button is the one on the left hand side (with the house on), not the one at the top of the remote.
