EE TV Box turning on by itself

I have recently changed from BT to EE. I now have a black box to control my TV, but the box comes on itself quite often which starts the TV working. I have spoken to EE support and have been given a replacement remote control but I still get the problem.

There is no pattern that I can identify about when this happens. I see other comments on this Forum about what looks to be the same problem so I am not alone.

I do not like the idea of electrical equipment out of control. Potentially this could be a fire risk.

Is there anyone with a full solution to this?

Hi there….  WOW - I am not alone! I didn’t think anything of the the first time it happened…. Although it was at 3am and I was scared as I thought I had intruders in the house with the noice from downstairs.

it has now happened three times in the last 2 months and I think I’m going mad.

the tv is on standby and the EE box is OFF…. But I come downstairs and the tv and EE box are both on…. Which is really odd as normally when I need to watch the tv and EE I have to press 2 remotes and also change the “source” input….

any help on this would be appreciated.

@Mariegio42 as per the conversation above, the recommendation is that you change your power settings to Always Ready for now.  This should prevent this happening.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Ours hadn't happened for months but has done it twice since Xmas. It was
fixed once by updating the wifi box. Haven't done that since though. How
often does the box need updating?
Hi Darren

I will do this x

All EE TV Boxes/Hubs update themselves, as long as they're left in standby - not switched off at the socket.  You don't need to do anything to update them.

Since I have left my TV Box in SMART mode I have not had this problem for several months now. Since the box comes alive instantly from pressing the EE button on the remote I assume that the box is still partially awake, thus using power to the detriment of the envoirenment and my fuel bill. I know the amount of power used is smaller than leaving the box powered up but with a great many people in the same state this becomes significant.

Absolutely @JZW_2025 - this isn't the permanent fix. It's just a workaround until the issue is found and fixed.  It's a better option than being woken in the night, I hope you agree.

It was the WiFi box not the TV box that got updated. I phoned the EE
helpline and they did it over the phone.

Yep - Wifi boxes (Hubs) also update themselves. I'm guessing the helpdesk applied a specific patch to your Hub, however I'm not aware of any known issues with the Hub that could cause the TV Box to be turned on.

Is this still ongoing as we're having the same problems? We were woken up again last night. Standby mode was set to SMART but I've just changed it to Always Ready. TV is an LG.
