Scam phone number , a relative was conned, don't get caught out

A relative was sent a message telling them that they owed money on PayPal.

My relative called the number given and thought it was sorted.

However the number was based in Florida USA. So the call cost £33.

The number was 0018133567098

The scam was getting her to call a foreign number.

Please circulate to prevent anyone else falling for this

A few more questions than answers here, to be honest!

The main one is that scammers don't get any revenue from a user making international calls, these are not like premium-rate calls where the owner of the numbers gets a cut of the incoming call charges. The two types of number work differently.

Secondly, always wise to check the number you're calling, if you receive a message from someone. There is one common scam where your relative says "I've got a new number and I need some money" - the number is a complete stranger and you end up transferring funds via BACS transfer to said stranger.
