I have received at least 5 phone calls recently from unknown people saying they had a missed call from me & had dialed my number back. I had never called these people?!

@K80HVY : Your no. has been spoofed, probably by scammers to hide their id while scamming others. The Number Spoofing Scam - Ofcom explains what could be causing this. It usually dies down after a short time, but if you feel like you need to, you can change your number through our Customer Support team.
