Phishing using the number listed in "Phone numbers EE partners will call from"

I received a phishing call from the number 01942 901397.

The caller claimed to be from EE and asked me to provide the PIN that I had just received via text message, which makes it clearly a phishing attempt. I did not share the PIN code.

However, I would like to understand why this PIN was generated in the first place. Does this mean that someone was attempting to make changes to my account (for example, a SIM swap, account access, or profile update), which triggered the PIN being sent?

If I had to place bets, then yes - someone was trying to gain access to your account which triggered the OTP.

Not providing that is absolutely correct, unless you're talking to a CS agent and want to pass security.
