Calls from similar number

Hi.. today I received a call from a very similar number to mine just a couple end digits off.. the guy said he was returning a call I just made to him (which I hadn't) and then I told him I had not called him and he said OK no worries bye.

Thinking this was an anomaly of some sort I went on with my day.. then when I was away from my phone around an hour later another different number very similar to mine I have a missed call from.. no message left.

I am not sure what the scam could be here..is someone else somehow using my number to call people?

I have just had the same issue today. 6 calls received so far since 9:30 from numbers similar to mine. EE, we have a problem. Please look into it.

Its pointless changing your number as it happens to different EE numbers. Both me and my partner are being bombarded with calls from numbers almost identical to ours and our numbers are completely different. What's going on EE?

Hi @Geri1966,

Welcome to the EE Community. 🙂

I'm sorry to hear you have been receiving nuisance calls.

For more information, please see Call spoofing.

This is called Neighborhood Spoofing.

The basic idea is they call from a number similar to yours on the basis that you might think it is someone you know - maybe you family has similar phone numbers.

In any event, the goal is to peak your interest and get you to answer - this tells the scammer the number is active and held by someone ready to take calls.

The number then goes onto a list for more targeted scam calls.

So, just dont answer them.

I’m having exactly the same issue! I received a call today at around 12 from a number which was identical to mine except the last 4 digits were off. I then received another phone call 10 minutes ago and the number again was identical to mine with only the last 2 digits being off. The fact that this seems to be happening a lot in such a short space of time is really concerning.

Yup me too. All today, not happened before. 3 similar numbers so far.

I’ve had 4 of these calls today

Hi @millman @Ruthielark @Lyona

Thanks for coming to the community.

I'm sorry to hear you have been receiving these calls.

Number spoofing, where a caller alters the caller ID, is an issue that affects all mobile networks worldwide.

You can find more information on this over at the Ofcom website, and in this community article.

Thanks.

Leanne.

Hi,

The same thing has happened to me the last 2 days. I have had about 10 calls from different numbers but all numbers had the first 8 digits the same as mine.

Also yesterday, for the first call i had a voice mail left which was recorded ‘robotic’ like voice saying that it was inland revenue and that i will be arrested if i do not press 1. I just deleted it. But because it was a mobile i called it back from my home phone. It went to answer phone with a polite lady’s voice. I then decided to save the number on my mobile so i could check if there was a picture on whatsapp, which there was which was also a lady.

I decided to text the person to say that i had a call from their number but they did not reply.

Sorry for long winded message but thought i would share the similar experience.

I have now blocked all the numbers.

Thanks

Gee
