Hi.. today I received a call from a very similar number to mine just a couple end digits off.. the guy said he was returning a call I just made to him (which I hadn't) and then I told him I had not called him and he said OK no worries bye.
Thinking this was an anomaly of some sort I went on with my day.. then when I was away from my phone around an hour later another different number very similar to mine I have a missed call from.. no message left.
I am not sure what the scam could be here..is someone else somehow using my number to call people?

What I don't see the point of is reporting the numbers if they are being spoofed? As the majority of people here are receiving calls from people claiming they called them first - if both people report surely it's just 2 innocent victims reporting each others number? 🤔
I also kept receiving a call from a number in London a few weeks back. Called it back to find out its Fitzdares bookmakers and they have a recorded message apologising saying if you've been called its a scam and someone is abusing their number. Seems kind of pointless to report such numbers to me.

"Re: Calls from similar number
@Christopher_G the inbound calls do but the first person who called me, accused me of calling them just a minute before and even sent a text showing this but this was not in my call log. My phone was in another room so impossible for me to have called them "
@s_corcoran You've hit the nail on the head.
This isn't 'spoofing' or 'phishing', it's someone actually using my phone number to call other people. Twice in the last two weeks I've had calls from and text's from numbers saying I'd called them, when I hadn't. The people I'm talking to when I ring them back to explain I haven't called them are absolutely adamant they've had a missed call from me, i then sincerely explain that I haven't called and that something, somewhere is going wrong.
There is a particularly frank member of this forum who keeps trying to explain it away as 'phishing', and 'it happens to all mobile networks'. Well, I'm sorry, but that's bull.
I've just ported my mobile number from Sky, it is a business mobile and I'm concerned as to why this is happening.
Even if this is a new form of 'phishing' and they can regenerate and call out from my own specific mobile number, how on earth is that allowed to happen? What technology allows someone to specify MY number to call out from? And what data breach and from where has this information become freely available?

I am getting exactly the same, calls with the same numbers except for the last 2 or 3 digits. I keep missing the calls because they only ring a couple of times. When I phone back the call just drops without ringing. I can't block them all, although I may try 🙂
I have also received many calls (not selling crypto currency! So they say!). I am wondering if there is a connection. If I find out more I will return to this post. Thanks

Found this from a google search ("scam calls coming from last 3 digits of my number changed").
I'm an O2 customer and been getting these a lot. I've installed an app that came recommended called "Mr. Number" from the Play store, that lets you block all numbers from a range (except any in your contact list), so it now auto blocks anything that is almost entirely the same number as mine except the final 3 digits, which solved it.
Nobody has stolen your number. Nobody has stolen your phone. And there is ZERO point in reporting the numbers to any system as the numbers are spoofed.
Spoofing happens because call centres (usually Indian based) used VOIP (voice over IP) - a system that lets them use the internet, to call people on phones, automatically. To do this, the receiving end needs to be told a phone number (even though the origin is actually an internet IP), and lets them literally enter any number they want. There is no verification. No security. No check. They can make it look like they are calling you from your own number, your parents (if they happened to know it), even your local bank branch number or your doctor's GP number.
The entire system is broken, and needs fixing at a fundamental infratstructure level. Phone companies in the UK need to come together and push for a fix - NOBODY should be able to call from abroad and be able to input any single number they want to appear at the recipient's end with zero checks security or systems in place to prevent it.
It's ridiculous that the entire phone network allows this.

Totally agree with you Hakdaddy74. Same thing has happened to me as everyone else on this page. If it continues to happen I shall get in touch with the Fraud squad and direct them to this page.
Come on EE, pull your finger out and do something about this!

I've had 10 calls over the past month from different numbers, all similar to mine but the last 3 digits are different. I reject and block most, but in one instance I rejected the call and instantly the same number rang back and called again 1 minute later.
It's becoming extremely annoying and worrying that so many of us are going through the same issues and there doesn't seem to be anything we can do about it.
Is there no way to stop / filter out such nuisance calls?

Hi there @Em890
Thanks for posting.
Unwanted marketing calls and number spoofing (where nuisance callers and criminals deliberately alter the caller ID) are problems that affect users of all mobile networks.
You can find out more about number spoofing on the Ofcom website.
You can report the call to EE just text 'call' to 7726 followed by a space, then the number that called you, we use the data collected to help protect all of our customers.
Thanks.
Leanne.

Oh come on Leanne, this is TERRIBLE advice in a thread entirely about calls from SPOOFED NUMBERS - you will literally be reporting legitimate (innocent people who had nothing to do with anything) phone numbers.
As an INDUSTRY - EE - and other phone companies (mobile and terrestrial), need to fix this at a fundamental level, and prevent VOIP companies from being able to report themselves as being from any number they want, or churning out infinite randomised numbers at an unlimited rate daily from automated systems.

This has happened to me twice today and a few times each day for the past week. I answered one today and he said I had called him he said he was called “Nigel”. Saved his number to look at his WhatsApp photo and it looks like a picture of a carpet!? Clearly a big problem going on looking at everyone else’s responses EE should be looking into it not fobbing everyone off.

I am currently having this problem hence why I'm on here. For over 3 months nearly 3-6 calls everyday from a number very similar to mine. The last 3 digits are different every time. And when I call the numbers back not 1 person admits to calling me. Weird I know. Spoke to an old lady today she promised me she hadn't called her grandson took over the call and searched the call log and she definitely didn't ring me. So Ee what on earth is going on I would like to know
