Recycled phone number

Hi, Ive just been logged out of whatsapp, as i was using an old number for my whatsapp account i cant receive the 6 digit code to log back in. I still have the sim card, but Ive just found out that EE can recycle numbers so its being sent to someone else. I have spoken to the new owner of my old number and they very kindly said they could help me out with providing me the 6 digit number to help me log back in to then update my whatsapp number so i can then keep my account. Once this is done i assume they can then log back in to whatsapp and use my old number on their new whatsapp account? Is this possible to do or any other suggestions would be much appraciated.

Have you checked the help centre in WhatsApp? I would suggest contacting them, rather than trying to do what you have suggested. Why did you not back everything up before changing your number, and yes if number not used on pay as you go, they eventually get recycled, but that is after several months of  quarantine so that it does not cause any problems for anyone getting that number, os am surprised that someone is willing to help, I would be very careful about that, as it is a security risk.

How long ago is it since you have used that number? I would suggest registering afresh, if you have not logged into WhatsApp for a long time.

Thanks for the reply. Yes i have checked the whatsapp help centre but its not helpful for this situation. I do have whatsapp backed up to my phone, however it has been automatically logged out when someone has tried setting up an account with my whatsapp number. I havent used this number for a couple of years however i have kept the sim card just in case i ever need it, obviously i didn't realise they can just give my number to someone else which is ridiculous. what would be the security risk of me gaining access to my own whatsapp account and updating my number? This way it would allow me to keep my chat history and contacts and allow the person that has been issued my old number to setup a whatsapp account. Why would you think i havent logged into whatsapp in a long time?

I would advise getting back in touch with WhatsApp to see if they can help with your query and let you know how to get this sorted 🙂
