I am experiencing the same issue with numbers I have ported weeks ago from BT to EE.
My phones are iPhones with esims.
Solved! See the answer below or view the solution in context.

Hi @Dc107
Welcome to the community.
This is usually something we can sort out easily on an iPhone.
If you go to Settings, then Apps followed by Phone, is the correct number showing? If it isn't, can you manually change it?
Can you also check under Settings, App, Messages and check the number is correct and ticked under iMessage?
Let me know how that goes.

Thanks for the quick reply. I’ve tried the above Michael and retested. The problem remained . However I noticed that the recipient was using an Android phone and it said the message type received was RMS. So I’ve switched off RCS (RMS) messaging in settings and retested. That has worked. However I would rather be able to have RCS turned on so any ideas that would let me switch it back on would be appreciated. I have a feeling it may have been caused by the temporary number being delivered as an ESim and that the ESim was running in parallel for a while with the BT physical sim waiting for the porting across.So on the iPhone there were two Sims active at same time.

@Dc107
If your BT SIM is no longer active, it's best to remove this from your device to avoid any confusion.
With your number ported over, the new number should update on Apples system fairly quickly, so as long as your actual number is showing correctly in the settings you should be able to switch it back on again after 30 minutes. The device will then automatically check the correct number is updated for messaging.

Thanks for the suggestion Ali.
I would have expected it would have happened as you suggest however it was extremely untidy even though the physical Sims were indeed removed as soon as the numbers had ported to the eSIMs.
Just as a bit of background, I’m an IT professional with over 30 years experience including many years being responsible for a fleet of about 2000 mobile phones. In comparison with my experience of many other migrations the process of moving from BT to EE should be extremely straightforward but it actually took many attempts even to start the porting process , the problems being at EE not BT (the BT codes were received very quickly, entered to EE on line, via web and then finally when neither approach worked, using the app on each handset. In fact the process took so long I had to pay for another month of usage on the three BT Sims because EE took so long to use the BT codes and hence the BT sims remained active.

@Dc107
Are your iMessages showing the correct number between iPhones?
