Why am I being asked to buy data abroad when I am on an unlimited plan? I called EE last month to confirm my data plan would work abroad and was told there would be no extra charges.

Outside the EU, you cannot use your usual UK allowances there but will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out in https://ee.co.uk/help/mobile/roaming/roaming-costs/countries/egypt.

@AlexM224 , that is why you are being asked to buy data when in Egypt, as it is not part of Europe and cannot use your unlimited data. It is expensive to use data in Egypt. When I was there two years ago, I did not use data at all but used just wifi and made sure that I could make calls.
You can roam, but need to make sure that you have data as extra.

If you are confident that an EE staffer advised you could use inclusive data within Egypt, that creates a basis for complaint.
Others have already posted a link to EE's online roaming costs tool.

Good morning @AlexM224.
Welcome to the EE Community, and I hope you've been having a great time out in Egypt too!
As a couple of the guys have pointed out here, roaming costs and add-on usage do vary depending on where it is you're visiting, but we would always expect you to be told the correct details when querying this with our team.
We can't extend the inclusive roaming to destinations where it's not included, but like @bristolian mentioned you're certainly welcome to log this as a complaint with our customer care team so they can investigate further what's happened.
Here you can find all of the details on how to get in touch and get this raised either via calling our team once you're home, or filling out our complaints webform.
