Hi I'm in Denmark for work and really need my phone to make calls and send texts. I had the message from EE acknowledging I'm in the EU but texting ROAMEU RO DENMARK etc to 150 just tells me I don't have a spend cap when I do of £30. The phone connects to the network and sends data and receives messages but I really need the calls and texts. Auto-connect is off as is SharkFishNetwork. All help appreciated as have 2 days on a really important job.

Try manually selecting alternative local networks, see if the symptoms are the same.

Hi thanks for replying.
I finally got through to EE who told me to turn the phone off and on again, but still couldn't send texts. Was then told changes had been made so I won't face any more issues, it will definitely work after a few hours however could be up to 24hrs. They have refreshed the network somehow. No idea what is going on but supposedly it'll all be fixed. Then told my spend cap had been removed so won't cap other charges but can change it if I send a text, which of course I can't.....In the mean time I then couldn't text my bank to confirm it was me using my card to pay for my hotel so it got declined. My work requires me to make calls and text and there'll be no wifi, so a pretty desperate situation.

It seems lots of people having an issue with mixed information on several posts as I too read that you don't need to activate roaming beforehand as you can do it once abroad, however it seems that especially with a contract you have to do it in UK. When I arrived in Denmark and recently in Switzerland and Belgium I got the automatic notification of being in that country and info on roaming but this time it also mentioned my spend cap, saying I might not be able to use my phone as the spend cap was too low, despite having upped it to £30 from the recommended £20. I don't think there's anything I can fix from here, I'll wait and see if their resetting at their end works and they kindly offered some free extras but I still need to find a way of getting my work done in the mean time and then making sure this can't happen again.

Roaming is always best activated in the UK before leaving the country. On PAYG It needs to be, on pay-monthly it's a darn sight easier.
Roaming enables access to foreign networks, so without it your phone won't get coverage abroad. On pay-monthly you can only enable roaming whilst abroad, by contacting EE-CS, for which you'll either need another working phone or an internet connection to use a web-calling app such as Skype.
Enabling it in the UK before leaving is a simple exchange of text messages.
