Same problem, not receiving any texts. Makes dual authorisation impossible so cannot perform any financial business. I have paid the additional charge to enable roaming, it’s just not working properly. Neither am I able to use my phone’s hotspot to link my iPad. Very very disappointed with EE. Just tried to get technical help and the guy said he would phone me right back, never heard from him so EE customer support is not very supportive. Frustration is growing by the minute and I am paying for the privilege of having something that doesn’t work. Can’t wait to get back to O2, I never had any issues in UK or overseas.
Solved! See the answer below or view the solution in context.

@Tarranpr : Are you on contract or PAYG? Had you used that SIM for making calls or texts in UK before you left to go abroad?
If you are on contract, did you activate roaming on your EE a/c before you left UK by texting ROAMING to 150? Having a roaming billing add-on doesn't of itself activate roaming on your a/c. Having roaming activated on your EE a/c, not just on your device, is crucial to using your contract SIM abroad.
Often just rebooting the phone is the simple remedy. Also try selecting a network manually rather than auto.
Otherwise you need to call CS to get your roaming activated. Try calling CS on the Freephone no. in my sig. on Skype over WiFi. It should be free.

Receiving texts abroad needs network coverage, which in turn needs roaming being enabled - there is no charge for this, but it's often confused with chargeable billing add-ons which reduce the cost of roaming.
Is the reason you can't send or receive texts, that you don't have coverage?... That will also prevent voice calls & mobile data being used. Enable roaming (free of charge) via CS, and all will be well. You'll just need to find another means to do so.

So thanks all for the advice. It turns out (eventually thanks to a charming Irish lady from Wexford) that the network was at fault and all I needed to do was change to a different Greek network. That would have been simple for the thick chatbot to tell me but nope.
Anyway all’s well….at the moment
