Getting out of the Aus phone network is a little different.
When calling a UK landline from Australia, you need to follow these steps:
STEP 1: Dial the Australian exit code – ‘0011’ from a landline or ‘+’ from your mobile.
STEP 2: Dial ‘44’ for the UK country code.
STEP 3: Dial the UK area code (without the first 0) and local number.
For example, if you’re calling a London landline with the local number 1234 5678, the complete sequence would be:
0011 44 20 1234 5678 or +44 20 1234 5678.

It's exactly the same as making an international call from any other country - using + as an international access code, and dropping the leading zero is a global standard.
