PAYG without monthly subscription roaming

I am on PAYG not having a monthly subscription but only top up whenever I need.  If I just want to receive sms in Europe but not using data, can I just turn on roaming on my phone?  I understand the tariff for receiving a sms is 30p.

Roaming is an account-level function which needs enabling on your SIM to allow access to foreign networks. Without it, you won't have that access and this won't receive coverage outside the UK.

The phone-menu you're thinking of is likely "data roaming" which allows access to mobile data whilst already roaming.

Receiving SMS is free globally.

@MT168 : As long as you've used that PAYG SIM for making calls or texts in UK before you leave to go abroad, receiving SMS is free globally.

I have used the PAYG sim in the UK for calls or texts.  Do I need to do anything (either with my phone or call EE) in order to receive a text e.g. from a bank giving me an OTP to complete some transaction?  While I was in Europe previously, I did receive welcome message from EE.
