PAYG cannot be linked with my account

bought a new PAYG sim card, tried to add it to my account which has no number on it, but failed. alert message saying "this number has been linked with other aco**bleep**". why and how to get it sorted?

Are you logged into your My EE account and adding the number in the account settings, when you get this message?
