Your best bet is to give EE  a call directly so that they can talk to you about it and discuss your account and contract personally with you.

Here we can only give you general advice as to what to do, so speaking with EE directly would be a better option as then you are free to discuss your own contract and any fees or monies owed etc.

If you went for a contract with the Annual Upgrade, then you would need to use your existing phone to trade in for the upgrade, pay any upgrade or outstanding fees and you'll be signed up to a new 24 month contract or another Annual Upgrade one if you select it.

The same with Upgrade Anytime, you will need to swap your phone, pay any upgrade or outstanding fees and sign upto a 24 month new contract.

@195264961  Upgrading early will mean having a more costly tariff than you do now.  Or.

If you want to lower your tariff cost you will have to pay off the remaining term of your current contract.    And for that you need to call customer services tell them you want to pay it off so you can have a cheaper sim only.
