payg sim card in japan

I have a payg sim card and going to japan shortlhy, i intend to use data only. the faq says to buy data on arrival. what does it mean? will i get a message on how to top up me ee simcard after landing?i'll need to keep my mobile number so i won"t be able to use a japanese simcard.thanks

Yes you will receive a text about costs and add-ons available. It won't be cheap.
