How can I be sure that I will be able to make calls and use app's in Qatar without any service problems or hidden charges?

@nigelqpr68 : As it is not in EU, you cannot use your usual UK allowances there but will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out in https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/roaming-costs/countries/qatar.
If you are on contract, remember to text ROAMING to 150 before you leave UK to ensure roaming is enabled on your account.

There are bolt ons available for roaming in Qatar but these will add up (especially if your team end up making it all the way to the final).
Your best bet will be to pick up a 'fan sim' when arriving in Qatar. Both Ooredoo and Vodafone are offering them. You'll get a local number, data etc to allow you to contact home much cheaper. Just be aware the internet will be a lot more restricted there so some sites won't work.
If you have a dual sim iPhone, you can still keep your EE sim in there as well so you can receive iMessage, texts and WhatsApp to your UK number. Just ensure you're using the Qatari sim for the data connection.
Oh and text: VM OFF to 150 before you leave (or type in ##002# as a code into your phone and dial it). If you don't, any incoming calls you don't answer that end up routed back to voicemail will cost you.
Best to let it ring out when ur abroad
