@jeanette78 There is a cost to use your device aboard. You pay the daily rate of £2.47 or your purchase the roam abroad pass at £25 that lasts 30 days. These add ons allow you to use your tariff allowance while there. You also have to make sure roaming is enabled on your account before you leave the UK. Add ons don’t enable roaming there just add ons. To enable roaming just text ROAMING to 150. It costs nothing to have roaming enabled and without this being enabled you’ll not connect to a roaming network.

Thank you, I usually purchase the roam abroad pass, but this year the family is coming with me, so no ringing home, only texting family on holiday with me.

@jeanette78 You still need to pay regardless of where the other devices are that your calling your still roaming. Adds are not just for calling back to the UK it’s to use your device abroad.

Outside the EU, roaming is charged on a per-usage basis - meaning you pay per-text or per-minute.
Within the EU, roaming is charged on a flat-rate basis - you have full use of your UK allowances, for either a daily (£2.47) or monthly (£25) charge.
When you are calling or texting other UK mobile users, you're calling/texting the UK as they have +44 UK numbers. Those users are then responsible for the incoming international part of the call/text.
