Why do we pay for Scam Guard on our Mobile 'phones? If we do, does it work and if not, is it just another way of EE increasing their profits?

As to why you are paying for it, that is a personal value judgement based on the benefits. It can be removed from your account at any time after the first 30 days - meaning you are no longer paying for it.

Just like any other paid-for service, if you have a problem with an element of your mobile service, then report it and seek resolution.
Can you explain the problem you're having with your scam guard service? Perhaps someone can help you with it.
