I have just purchased 1 months Roaming for Australia/ should I turn on Roaming in Mobile data options?

You do need to enable roaming on your account, which is not a phone setting but a network one.

Text ROAMING to 150 - this will ensure your phone is able to connect to local networks in foreign countries.

The phone setting you're referring to, just says whether the device will use mobile data whilst roaming. It won't enable roaming in the first instance.

@RUM2 : If you intend to use data while roaming in Oz you will need to turn on Data Roaming on your phone. This has nowt to do with any roaming add-on you may have nor your settings in your MyEE as to your ability to roam abroad. 

Remember to text ROAMING to 150 before you leave UK to ensure roaming is enabled on your account.
