Very inconvenient and not at all user friendly. I am having the same problem.

What is your roaming problem - can you explain the symptoms?

I get a message saying the service you are requesting is restricted or
unavailable. Please contact customer service.
But who is customer service? In fact any number i try to phone produces the
same American voice message. I need to talk to EE. I did manage to add some
wifi service but even that doesn’t seem to be working any more!

Did you activate roaming before leaving the UK?
