Losing mobile service abroad, losing patience

I have a similar issue, can roam in Europe most of the day but at least once each day I will lose connection to the local provider and there is a very long delay before it reconnects, sometimes to the same one but sometimes to a different one, when I can't use my phone at all.

does anyone know how long the automated switching should take?

rebooting the phone will speed it up but I'd rather not have to keep doing that every time.

The speed of re-selection depends on the reason for having to reselect in the first place.

Losing coverage of a preferred network should result in a shorter time of retrying before choosing an "available" network.

I'm not aware of any hard & fast rule.
