No roaming in Portugal

malmcd2812

Have been coming to Portugal for years and never had an issue with previous O2 contract

Changed to EE and paid for roaming in Portugal and cannot get anything either texts or calls unless I am on WiFi !! Have changed to MEO and NOS but still getting nothing   Has it got something to do with a spending cap ? My partner has still got O2 and same phone but hers shows up as  4G when WiFi switched off. When I switch WiFi off I have nothing and cannot text or phone

Any thoughts or solutions please

Are you on contract or PAYG? Did you use that SIM for making calls or texts in UK before you left to go abroad?

If you are on contract, did you activate roaming on your EE a/c before you left UK by texting ROAMING to 150? Having a roaming billing add-on doesn't of itself activate roaming on your a/c.

Often just rebooting the phone is the simple remedy. Also try selecting a network manually rather than auto. Otherwise you need to call CS to get your roaming activated. Try calling CS on the Freephone no. in my sig. on Skype over WiFi. It should be free.

If you think I helped please feel free to hit the "Thumbs Up" button below.

To phone EE CS: Dial Freephone +44 800 079 8586 - Option 1 for Mobile Phone & Mobile Broadband or Option 2 for Home Broadband & Home Phone

ISPs: 1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up > 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB > 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB > 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU > 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU > 2011: Orange 20 Meg WBC > 2014: EE 20 Meg WBC > 2020: EE 40 Meg FTTC > 2022:EE 80 Meg FTTC SoGEA > 2025 EE 150 Meg FTTP

What another operator's phone does is immaterial for troubleshooting an issue with an EE one. Equally what you've paid for is a billing add-on to reduce the cost of roaming, you still need to have enabled international roaming separately.

This is a free facility and is what allows your EE phone to connect to foreign networks. Without having done this, your phone won't get coverage abroad and will cause exactly the symptoms you describe. Follow the advice above to check whether you have enabled roaming, which is normally done before leaving your home network in the UK.

Hi thereYes indeed I am on a contract and yes I contacted EE to get Roaming on for Portugal and yes I was told it was activated and yes obviously I rebooted a couple of times and yes I switched to manual choice and switched between MEO and NOS and yes it still did not workI contacted EE and they offered me a monthly roaming deal of £15 a month rather than £2.90 a day and I took the monthly option and it still didn’t workThey also said the monthly deal would double on the 18th of October !!Seemingly there was an issue with the roaming cap and if I get rid of it I actually get the service I am paying for !!Thanks for your thoughts on a possible solution 😂

You talk about billing add-ons a lot, these are immaterial without (free) roaming permissions being active - enabling your phone to access foreign networks.

However, CS should check this when you speak to them - a free ROAMING text to 150 is always worth a belts & braces check, but the only other thing worth checking is your spend cap.
