Do I need to turn on romaing to receive messages when I am abroad ?

I am flying to China tomorrow, do I need to turn on romaing to receive messages there ? and I guess receive messages is free worldwide ? Thanks

If you want to use mobile data, send or receive text messages over a mobile network, or make/receive calls on a mobile network, then you need a connection to a local mobile network in China.
That foreign network connection is known as roaming - using your phone abroad. If your phone is on pay-monthly, texting ROAMING to 150 before you leave the UK will enable this.
Receiving text messages is free anywhere in the world.
