I will be going to Costa Rica on business in October for 2 weeks. I have checked the roaming charges and can see that making and receiving calls is £2.34 a minute, which is more expensive for contracts than Pay as you go!
As well as this, I can see I can purchase a roaming day pass for only 150MB costing £7.84.
My questions are:
- Are there no better options to get data and minutes while abroad?
- Will Costa Rica ever be added to the Roam Abroad add-on?
I have looked around and can see that other mobile providers offer far better options than what EE is providing.
Solved! See the answer below or view the solution in context.

Hi @TBurdon
If this is a regular visit then get a local sim like it is 1980.
If you use wifi invest in a VPN.
Thanks

Hi @TBurdon
Welcome to the community.
Is your phone on a personal plan or a business plan? All of your available options should show on the roaming tool.
I'd recommend utilising WiFi as much as possible while you're there, data-wise.

If you scroll across where the data-pass add-on is shown, then call & text add-ons are also listed.
Data usage outside the EU & Roam Abroad countries is often expensive.

Hi Chris,
I am on a personal plan.
I understand all of the option, but, I am just confused on how a pay as you go call is cheaper abroad than that of a contract.
I am going to try and use WiFi as much as possible, but I know there is a lot of areas with limited connections.
That is why I am also curious if Costa Rica will be added to the Roam abroad list, or if this will never happen?

Hi @TBurdon
Thanks for coming back to us.
Sorry we have no details on any possible changes to the roam abroad pass.
You can find all current available add-ons and charges on the Roaming Costs page.
Leanne 🙂

Outside of allowances, PAYG calls within UK (40p/min) are cheaper than contract (83p/min). So it's like a general tendency.
