Do I need to request 5G or should it just work?

I entered into a 5g plan a few months ago when I only had a 4G phone, I now have a 5G capable phone (Google Pixel 7a) but I'm  still only getting 4G. Can anyone tell me if I need to request 5G or should it just work?

My phone downloaded Android 14 update during the night and hey presto, I now have 5G

If you already had a 5G-plan, now have a 5G-phone, and are in a 5G coverage area, you should receive 5G services.

Apologies, I should have added that the coverage map states good 5G coverage outdoors and not so good indoors but my phone continues to report "4G" on the screen next to the mobile network icon regardless of me being in or outdoors

Have you been able to try other areas to see if you have 5G signal? 

Is there anyone else in the area that you know on EE and have 5G showing?

I only set the phone up this afternoon so I haven't had a chance to delve into the problem in any depth yet, I just thought I'd ask the question first to make sure that the phone should be working on 5G before I started chasing a problem that doesn't exist.

I have a similar issue. Just got a new phone (pixel 8a) and my esim in it won't connect to 5G in 5G areas whereas it would in my old phone... Wondering if any solutions out there!

Could you check your phone settings and see if 5G is showing in your network settings?
