Choosing preferred network type / disabling 5G

It is a fairly well-known fact that, unlike other networks, EE restricts the ability to choose one's preferred network type. E.g., on an average Android device, navigating to Settings -> Network -> Mobile network -> Preferred network type, presents a multiple-choice list of preferred network types (usually something along the lines of 5G/4G/3G/2G, 4G/3G/2G, etc. in decreasing order). On EE, however, 5G/4G/3G/2G is the only option available.

Living in an urban area with, officially, no 5G coverage (though adjacent parts of the city, on either side do have it), the reality is there is decent outdoors coverage, which is a nice bonus. However, indoors, there is just a smidge of, completely unusable, 5G coverage, on top of the rather meagre 4G network. So while mobile data is just about usable, at a stretch, while on 4G, they are interrupted by frequent attempts of the phone to connect to 5G, during which time virtually no data is transferred. After it falls back to 4G, the connection resumes.

I'm fairly certain I'm not the only one in this position, and I would very strongly encourage EE to add this option (or more likely remove its block on it), and allow us to choose to connect to 4G (or even older) networks only - or at the very least provide an explanation on why that is not feasible, even though it seems to work fine for other networks.

(I am aware it is possible to disable 5G through a hidden system menu, but that can't be considered a universally acceptable alternative - especially for a switch one might like to flip a few times a day, on some days.)

Hi @argymeg1

I'm sorry to hear this.

I would suggest getting in touch with our Tech Gurus on 150 and they will get this looked into further for you.

Leanne.

Hi @Leanne_T ,

Thank you for your response. Is 150 the best place to leave feedback about this issue? That's really all I want to do at this stage, it's clearly a systemic issue and I don't really expect an immediate solution.

The team on 150 will be able to raise a complaint against your account and look for a solution for you, if there is one, @argymeg1.

I had this issue with several new devices and had to go with an app downloadable from the Playstore called "Band selector" it forces the phone to use the now hidden choice menu and you can keep your phone in 4G/4G+ mode without worrying about 5G searching or battery drain 🙂

Hope that helps!

I had the same issue.

Found a solution https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/15g83lc/turning_off_5g/

The solution by user u/yahiroz on Reddit:

"This option doesn't always appear, for some reason it's network dependant (no idea why Google allowed this). If the option is missing then you need to enter this in the dialler:

*#*#4636#*#*

Then go to "Phone information", find "Select preferred network type" and select the what it's currently at but without NR (eg if currently NR/LTE/GSM/WCDMA, select GSM/WCDMA/LTE)."

Most networks won't want users picking and choosing their connectivity types so on phones provided by the networks, this functionality is often locked down. It was on my EE provided S22 Ultra however my Samsung provided S23 Ulrra lets me disable 5G and to be honest, 5G doesn't impress me as the speeds often seem lower than 4G, with limited coverage, and due to the way 5G is implemented currently, it sucks battery.
