Unreliable Mobile Broadband Connection

Hi.

I moved out into an apartment in my city centre just over a year ago, but unfortunately we were unable to get any decent packages for home broadband, so we settled on mobile broadband. We have been using 5GEE mobile broadband ever since, and the speeds have been fine, and so has the uptime of the connection. However, I regularly game online, and the connection that I get is pretty poor. I constantly get the connection issue icons that pop up in games, relating to high latency, latency variance, packet loss, etc. Recently I have been trying to play overwatch, however the connection is so unstable that I cannot stay connected in the voice channel in game. It's definitely an issue with the connection as I found a forum post talking about the same issue that others had, albeit with other providers, but the point still stands. It is clearly a fault of the game (or perhaps a choice they have made) as much as it is of the connection, but on my old BT connection at home I had no issues. Characters in games are always jumping around and it makes the experience pretty poor.

I've also noticed that whenever I'm on a website that tries to pull location, i.e google searches, the location is never accurate. I live in Nottingham, however the location results are miles away, oftentimes Manchester and London. I figured that this was just a part of mobile broadband, but I imagine the 2 are connected.

One other thing I have noticed earlier is that I looked on the signal checker, and it says that in my area we are only able to get 4G indoor and outdoor, but when we went into the store to get the contract signed, we were told that the area will support 5G. I now can't help but think this is also part of the issue.

This is not me specifically trying to complain or anything, I am just simply trying to get some more technical advice on what I can do to solve my problems. Is there anything I can do in my router settings, or with my router, anything like that. The more technical the better, because things like using a different ethernet cable have already been tried and don't work. If there are any programs I can download to showcase how the connection performs, I'd be more than willing to post the results.

Hi @dasnazty

Welcome to the community.

I'm a gamer myself so I understand how frustrating this must be. Most games consoles and platforms perform better when connected to fixed line broadband with a static IP and are generally designed as such. I'm not aware of any changes that you can make within the router to make it perform better in these specific areas.

Hopefully another user who has had a similar experience in the past will come along to shed some light for you.

Chris

Then perhaps it shouldn't be advertised as such?

It says "Get our fastest ever WiFi. Perfect for working or gaming on the go. " in the FIRST part of the description of their 5GEE mobile broadband! https://shop.ee.co.uk/mobile-broadband

Here is a copy of the user manual that no longer exisits. You could try tweaking some of the settings in the advanced part that may help.
