I topped up the credit on my mobile broadband this morning but have been unable to purchase any usage. I've tried on multiple devices and it says that the browser didn't complete request in time.

Why have you been unable to purchase any data? Have you tried? How?
Look at http://add-on.ee.co.uk/status from a device connected to your mobile router by WiFi to see data & credit status.
