5GEE Router 2021 "Spam" text messages

I'm a brand new EE customer, I bought the 18-month contract for the 5GEE Router and a SIM-only contract for my new iPhone.

Unfortunately I just had to get in touch with EE to have the phone number for the 5GEE Router changed, as since day-1, I had been receiving some very dodgy looking spam text messages.

The usual "Spam" messages with links telling me to "click here" for example, but also some very suspect messages including several offering to sell me narcotics? They appeared to be "County Lines" text messages, coming through to a brand new EE router?

We all know what that means, but why was I receiving these texts on a supposedly "new" number from EE less than 24 hours after setting it up?

There is no way of blocking numbers on the 5GEE Router, which is an oversight, and wouldn't be difficult to install in a software update. The only advice I got from EE was to sign up to the TPS, which we all know is virtually useless, and wont work for these "county lines" spam text messages.

EE wanted to charge me £35 to change the number, which they quickly waived when I threatened to sever the contract (still within 14 days!) but still, that was totally unreasonable considering the number they provided me was receiving text messages offering to sell me illegal substances! I mean, really EE?!

I've been a customer for less than 2 weeks at this point, and I'm less than impressed.

The signal quality is mediocre with very limited 5G coverage within 30 miles of my home. I think i should be offered a discount on the advertised "5G" router if it only receives a 4G signal. I'll be happy to pay full price when EE brings 5G to my area.

I think the 5G coverage map on the EE website is 'less than accurate' to say the least.

Hi @MGK300

Welcome to the community.

I'm sorry to hear that you were receiving those messages. I'm glad to hear that our Mobile Care team were able to change your number free of charge.

With regard to the signal you're receiving, your router will pick up the best speeds possible for your area. Does the coverage checker show that you should get 5G?

The router may very will be new but its mobile no. won't be. It's been recycled after a reasonable period of dormancy.
