Unable to add EE perk to upgrade.

Took me a while to reactivate my perk discount account. It was sorted in the end and I was happy that I could finally upgrade, however, to my surprise I am unable to add this 'perk discount.' 

 

The unlimited full works SIM only deal on my upgrade screen is currently £33 a month. For new customers it is also £33 a month and I cannot add my 20% discount to this price. Realistically then, what is the purpose of this perk if I am unable to use it when it is time to upgrade. I understand time limited offers that EE offers but surely being an existing customer I should be able to add my discount to this. Is there no benefit to being an existing customer? 

 

I am for the first time in a long time contemplating leaving EE for another provider. Yes, EE's infrastructure provides great 4G connectivity, but it is very expensive for SIM only deals when compared to other providers. I do not need another phone just yet.

 

On this point of expense, why is EE continuing to charge me over £50 a month even after my 2 year contract has finished? Surely I have paid the device cost and then some? Why has it not been lowered in line with a SIM only plan which I technically now have?

The SIM Only tariffs that would be eligible for Perk discount currently are:

As you have found, some of the ongoing offers may be better than what you can achieve with your Perk discount - the Full Works offer is full of value with the extra benefits it offers. Even Unlimited Essentials at £23 is excellent, compared to being upwards of £32 previously.

Of course there is always somewhere cheaper, but the quality of your service may be lessened if you do not undertake your due diligence in regard to the quality of these alternatives through some real-world testing before committing. EE run their own network, as well as their large network of UK-based Guides in both Contact Centres and Retail Stores, the increasingly common MVNOs often do not have these same costs to contend with.

In terms of the second part of your post, EE's traditional contracts (24 month combined price for phone and plan) have no concept of a device cost or paying the device off. You agree to a specific price plan with a 24-month minimum term, after which this naturally carries on on a monthly-rolling basis.  Within or after the last 30 days you can either upgrade to another plan (including going "down" to SIM Only which takes effect after the minimum term expires, or to another Device Plan which you can change to up to 30 days early) or continue on the same deal out-of-contract.  

EE have since introduced Flex Pay - where you have a separate fixed-term Device Credit Agreement and monthly-rolling Airtime price plan (subject to a minimum term). On these plans there is an interest-free balance for the device which is paid in line with a schedule of payments, or can be paid off manually or in advance, after which the Device payments automatically stop. As there is a Device Credit Agreement (often referred to as Finance) involved, not all customers will be eligible for or want to choose this type of plan - although it sounds ideal for what you are wanting in the future.
