On a similar note....my son is going out to teach in Japan but his phone has 7months to run on his contract (which I still pay for as he has not long finished Uni).
Do I just have to bite the bullet and pay to end of contract?
If still under contract can he keep his number if he has to get a phone in Japan?
Thanks
.

@Dummer : My advice was about PAYG. You've tagged a contract query on it.
It's your choice whether to cancel the contract & pay exit fees. As long as you pay your monthly fee for the contract, you keep the no. Your son would be breaking the T&Cs by not having Stable Links with UK if he were to use the EE SIM outside UK for more than 2 months in any 4.

....your post has been moved to a new thread.
You are contractually bound to the remaining 7months of minimum term, regardless. There's a few options.
1: Pay up the remaining 7months now, get a 4% discount and choose to either cancel your son's number or migrate it to PAYG. If choosing PAYG, then ensure the new PAYG line is used in the UK first before travelling, else roaming will not be activated for use abroad.
2: Continue to pay the monthly contract as is, and use the phone in Japan - it won't be cheap for casual usage but check https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/roaming-costs > Japan > pay-monthly. Add-ons are available to reduce voice & text charges.
If you would be looking to cancel the contract at some point, option 1 would be easier. For the fact that new PAYG lines need activating in the UK first before travelling abroad - if this occurs partway through your son's stay abroad, then the SIM will stop working once the pay-monthly element is cancelled.
