Add on a phone to sim only

If I am a sim only contract and went back to a phone plan.. do I pay monthly for the addition of the phone or do they cancel out the sim only and swap ot over to the new phone and minutes contract

This would be an upgrade to a phone and plan, you would no longer have the SIM Only plan.
