If you want a new number anyway, there is no benefit in buying your chosen phone as an upgrade. Give 30days notice of cancellation on your current phone, and purchase a new phone as a new connection using your existing account.
You could always ask EE C/S on 150 if they will match the price of your chosen new-connection deal for a convenient upgrade and avoid the 30day overlap.
