Changing ownership of contract - upgrade before or after?

I plan to change ownership of my contract. Its currently under my mums name as it has been for years and I now want to transfer it over to my husbands account. I'm currently due an upgrade and I'm unsure whether to do this before or after the change? I don't want to lose my chance to upgrade or ruin my chances to change ownership by doing this the wrong way round.

Thanks

Hi @Pmacleod16

You will be unable to change your current plan after the change of ownership as it gets frozen for a period of time. I'm not entirely sure of this period (I feel it is either 3 or 6 months but unsure which) but they should be able to tell you when you're speaking to Customer Services.

If you are upgrading before DO NOT switch to a device finance plan (Flex Pay, two direct debits split between device and airtime/SIM) as these cannot have a change of ownership done on them as they are a financial arrangement tied to an individual that cannot be transferred.

It can only be a SIM Only or a 24 Month Subsidy agreement (one bundled payment with no split contract between phone and SIM) that you can do the change of ownership on, and this will be dependent on the credit status of your husband's account as to whether the line can be transferred to him. If it cannot it would have to stay where it is until the credit on his account improved to the point it can be accepted, however this is usually not an issue.

Your other option would be to do the change of ownership and stay on your existing plan until the end of the freeze period and then upgrade to whatever plan works best on your husbands account.
