Cancelling an EE contract/plan that was fraudulently opened withy details

I was recently the victim of fraud by a scammer (my first time being scammed, and hopefully the last).

I left my EE contract last month and was told I'd get a call from EE a few days before it ended to discuss keeping my number and switching it to Pay as you go. All good.

I received a call a few days before my contract ended from a scammer pretending to be EE and saying I would get a gift for having been a loyal customer. Now in hindsight I should've seen this as a major red flag, but I've never left a contract before and the scammer somehow had my address details already, so I said no problem. They gained access to my account when I provided them with codes sent to my phone number, which again should've been a big red flag but I unwittingly gave them access to my EE account. Unknowing to me, they ordered a Flexi plan that included sending an iPhone to my house that if I then tried to return they would apparently try to tell me to return it to them (the scammer), while I'd be left with the bill.

Luckily I did not accept the iPhone package, and it was returned to EE. I then called EE the next day to notify them of the fraud and cancel the plan that been fraudulently opened with my details. They said they would send the form to the fraud team to cancel it. At the time I thought that was the end of it.

Fast forward a month later and I see a £25 direct debit payment on my bank app for an EE device. I called EE again today to ask to cancel the plan. They said they the device had been returned, and they sent a form to the Fraud team, who will call me within 7 working days to formally cancel the contract.

The issue is I live in Lithuania and can't make or receive calls currently to the UK. I did then buy an add-on today for calls to and from UK but when I tried it this afternoon it didn't seem to work.

So I am really concerned they will try to call me but not get through. I asked EE if I could be contacted by email if the call doesn't go through and they said they will but I am still really concerned that I will not be contacted and be left with this plan that I have asked multiple times to cancel and EE have had the device of the plan already returned to them.

I am really frustrated that it is so difficult to cancel a plan that was fraudulently opened with my details, when the device has already been returned and I have now notified them twice that it was fraud and I want to cancel the plan.

Hi @JamesRusso1987,

Welcome to the Community!

I'm so sorry to hear about the trouble you've had with this line being taken out, and I can absolutely understand how concerning this must be for you.

The best thing to do right now would be to wait for the fraud team to complete their investigation, and you should hear back from us once this has been done. If you're not satisifed with this, or you're not confident that this will happen then you can raise a complaint, and our executive team will be able to get back to you over email.
