Cancel contract due to Roaming Pass price increase?

Redmi

When signing up to your 24-month mobile contract recently, the deciding factors were the price of the plan itself, as well as the price of the addons advertised as benefitting EE users. Your recent Roaming Pass price announcement, increasing the price from £15 to £25 per month from October is not only not in line with the Consumer Price Index, but is also a price increase outside of your annual price increase in March.

As such, please confirm EE customers can cancel their contracts without incurring penalties.

I'm outraged that EE has escalated its price for Roam Further to £25 a month (was only £10 a month a year ago). It's an ferocious ugly increase and makes EE look rapacious and horrid. Time to look for alternatives I'm afraid after about 20 years with EE. The ugly face of capitalism I suppose. What is EE thinking about?!!!

Hi @roydancer

Thanks for coming to the community.

From 18th October the Roam Abroad Pass increased to £25. This will apply to new and existing EE customers. We're reflecting increasing costs in providing the ability to roam for our customers

Customers with Smart Plans or inclusive extra's will continue to benefit from the pass. If you would like to look into switching to a plan that includes the Roam Abroad Pass as an Inclusive Extra, please get in touch with our mobile care team. Echoing what others have said, I chose EE solely based on the Roam Abroad add on.

An increase in line with inflation is understandable. An 150% increase once people are locked into contracts is a predatory and deceptive business practice.

I'll certainly be cancelling. Tempted to get on TrustPilot or file a consumer protection report as well.

@StueyD   Why does EE have to inform you of an optional add on.  It’s not contractual and doesn’t form part of the price plan you agreed to.

And if you’re going to speak with someone at least have the decency to use the @ key and name the person, that’s why I didn’t reply until now as I didn’t know you left a comment.

@Chris_B : If you buy something, "optional" (as they all are) or not , there's a contract made, possibly separate from the main contract. However if you haven't held it continuously when the price rose it just an ordinary price increase of goods, just like things in a shop.

Ofcom rules require you to notify customers of price increases one month in advance and give them the option to cancel their contract. Are you claiming this has been done in relation to each of the roaming price increases this year? If so when?

@gusSylvaticus  Not in this case as it’s not contractual, it’s optional.     It’s an add on cost increase and you don’t have to purchase any add ons.   The daily roaming rate of £2.29 within the EU is still the same.
