Why have I recieved new equipment after renewing my broadband/TV contract

No, same contract.

@RobPadd Is your Equipment from EE years old then, possible DV Digital Voice connection etc etc.

It was not an upgrade, just a renewal of an existing contract.  However, my current router is a BT one.

@RobPadd Can be a possible reason, have a look and say which one?

There is no such thing as a renewal. You either upgrade to another contract, even if it's the same plan as previous, or you do nowt & stay on the existing contract & plan which is now on a rolling 30-day notice basis.
